Medicine Hat police had to break up their city's first rave party Saturday night after three youths overdosed on a prescription stimulant drug.

"I've heard of raves in England and in larger cities but this is the first one we've had here," said Staff Sgt. Don Girling on Tuesday.

"It obviously concerns us because we want to let parents know what their kids are up to."

Police were called to the rave being held at a church-owned gathering hall after three young people overdosed on Ephedrine, a strong stimulant that was available in pill form in drug stores until last summer when the Alberta government made it a prescription drug.

"It is still very easy to get in the United States. They sell it at truck stops as wake up pills," said Girling.
