It's time for city officials to stop dancing around the issue of raves and after-hours clubs and bring in a rave bylaw, says Mayor Bill Smith.

Smith was perturbed Friday to learn a report on the proposed rave- club bylaw will not be dealt with at executive committee on Feb. 28 as scheduled. City officials say they may have to delay the report's delivery another month.

"This isn't rocket science. This should have been before committee and council long before now," the mayor said.

City council has directed the administration not to issue any new dance hall licences for rave clubs and after-hours clubs until the proposed rave bylaw has been approved.

Wes Taliani, co-owner of a new after-hours club that opened in the Inglewood area last weekend, says the delay is frustrating for small businesses like his. He wants to operate legally, but he is forced to operate outside the law because he still has debts and staff that need to be paid.

Smith said if the delay is for legal reasons, he can accept that.

But he pointed out that city officials have been working on the proposed bylaw for 18 months. "We have to respond faster on these things," he said.
